Proposed removal of wheel stops in Toronto

Project outcome

Thank you to everyone who took part in our survey regarding the proposal to remove the existing wheel stops from parking bays along The Boulevarde, Toronto. Based on the feedback from our community, the wheel stops will remain in place. To improve visibility and safety, they will be repainted with reflective white paint. The project team will continue to monitor the area and carry out safety assessments to ensure the space remains safe for all users. An engagement summary is also available to view.

About the project

The wheel stops were installed during road rehabilitation works in 2016–2017. Since installation, we’ve received reports of tripping incidents associated with the wheel stops. In response, a safety and infrastructure review was conducted.

The investigation found that removing the wheels stop is safe and won’t affect pedestrian safety or damage the infrastructure. Some vehicles might hang over the kerb but this won’t block the footpath. Parking restrictions for vehicles under six metres will still apply where the verge is narrow.

In locations where infrastructure such as seating or communication equipment may be affected, we will consider installing bollards as an alternative safety measure.
