Lake Macquarie Housing Strategy

Public exhibition

Our draft Lake Macquarie Housing Strategy is now on public exhibition. We’re inviting the community to review the strategy and make a submission by Monday 22 June 2026.

Our draft Housing Strategy plans for diverse, well-located and affordable homes that meet current and future needs.

Project Overview

The Lake Macquarie Housing Strategy was first developed in 2020 and updated in 2021. Since then, our city has experienced significant change. From global trends to local housing challenges, the way we live has evolved.

Housing availability and affordability remain key priorities for Council. We understand that residents are finding it increasingly difficult to access housing that is affordable, suited to their needs, well located, and supported by the necessary infrastructure.

Informed by community engagement and supporting studies, the revised Strategy reflects the current and future needs of our community. Supporting studies consider population change, development potential and the affordability of housing. This process helped us respond to today’s challenges and plan for tomorrow’s opportunities, guided by the values and aspirations of the people who call Lake Macquarie home.

In November 2025 we undertook stage one of community engagement to better understand the views of residents and industry on housing in our city. Feedback was gathered in three ways:

  • An independent, anonymous survey of 300 residents
  • an online community survey
  • an online industry survey

This feedback, together with insights from the Lake Macquarie Housing Forum, Community Strategic Plan and Local Strategic Planning Statement, informed the preparation of the updated draft Lake Macquarie Housing Strategy.
